I am not a wanna-bee, I am a wasp
Hey there! We understand that those little black and yellow insects buzzing around can be quite annoying at a summer picnic. But don’t worry too much! Those are wasps, and they do have a beneficial role in our ecosystem.
Did you know wasps are pretty crafty? They build their nests from paper, which they make by chewing strips of bark into mush and then spitting it out, yielding that well-known rough texture.
So, what do they look like? With their long waists and cone-shaped abdomens, wasps are pretty impressive. Unlike bees, they don’t have hair all over their bodies, and they can vary greatly in size from roughly half an inch to an inch and a half, depending on the type of wasp.
While they have similar colours to bees, wasps are often brighter with more complicated patterns. Classic yellow and black colours, of course, but also beautiful shades of metallic blue or red! Fair warning, the prettiest ones tend to be the most likely to hurt.
How to prevent wasps from coming to your home?
If you’re looking to keep wasps away from your home, here are some friendly tips:
Ensure that no food is exposed to the open air.
Try planting things they don’t like, such as citronella, mint, or eucalyptus.
You may even want to purchase or make a fake nest because wasps are fairly territorial and may choose to investigate another location if they see a nearby nest.
And don’t forget to fill in any cracks, window frames or avenues of entry into your home.
And if you wear perfume or flamboyant flowery clothing, you might want to dial things down a little so you don’t attract them.
Although they might appear a little menacing as they fly around doorways or look for a spot to build a nest, just keep in mind that all insects, including wasps, are just acquiring food. So if we can keep our picnics clean, we can all join in the summer fun!
